New double murder in Puerto Rico, with increasing crime

Two people died in a double murder registered this Monday in Guayama, a municipality on the south coast of Puerto Rico, a Caribbean territory where 553 people have died in violent incidents so far this year, 69 more than on the same dates in 2021.

Two people killed is the result of a shooting between the occupants of two cars registered at kilometer 86 on the PR-53 highway in the direction of Guayama to Salinas, which occurred shortly after noon this Monday.

The two deaths come after a weekend that left 13 murders on the Caribbean island, where in recent months there has been an increase in crime in the form of settling accounts mainly related to drug trafficking.

Violent deaths this Monday now number three, after the one that took place at dawn at the intersection between Ponce de León and Roosevelt avenues, in the Puerto Rican capital.

The number of murders in Puerto Rico so far this year stands at 553, which is 69 more than on the same dates last year, a fact that has already prompted the authorities to announce the tightening of police surveillance in the streets. .

The rise in murders comes at a time when members of the Puerto Rico Police are showing their discomfort with their working conditions, especially with their retirements.
