New details about next Ethereum update known

We recently reported on the next major update of Ethereum (ETH), called the Shanghai update. Currently, the developers are in the testing phase and are looking at what changes will eventually end up in the update. There is now a little more clarity about which proposals are most likely to make it to the update.

Planning Ethereum update unclear

It will probably be possible to move staked Ethereum as part of Ethereum improvement proposal (EIP) 4895. Proposals to increase the scalability of the network also seem to pass the update. However, when the update will take place exactly is less clear. Initially, this would take place around September 2023, but that date is now uncertain.

The schedule of the update is unclear as there seems to be some division about it among the developers. Part of this will be EIP-4895 along with some minor updates as early as March, and the other major changes in the fall. The other part wants to implement all changes simultaneously in a single update in the fall of 2023.

Ethereum Sharding

Fortunately, the developers are on the same page about the content of the Shanghai update. They will have to sit around the table about the implementation. EIP-4844 also made the final selection. This is the proposal that has to tackle the aforementioned scalability. This proposal passes shardinga blockchain technique that should significantly increase the number of transactions that the Ethereum network can handle.

In addition to the two aforementioned priorities, a number of other proposals have also been included in the final plans for the Shanghai update. These proposals are about improving the security of smart contracts on the Ethereum network.

Ethereum strikers have started to get a little nervous lately. They wonder when they can move their staked ethereum. Initially, a soft deadline for this was announced for 6 to 12 months after the merge. By September next year at the latest. So far, the developers have not yet been able to clarify the exact date of the update and the ethereum strikers will have to wait in suspense for a decision for the time being.
