Yohander Méndez pitched brilliantly to dominate the Caribes de Anzoátegui artillery, and Navegantes del Magallanes took a 6-0 victory on Monday, to tie the final series at three games apiece at a maximum of seven games to define to the champion of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.
Méndez (1-0) dominated the artillery of the defending champions of the circuit throughout seven brilliant shutout innings in which he threw ball of just two hits with nine strikeouts to take the victory. The setback went to the record of Henry Centeno (0-1), after allowing three runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings.
The Navegantes opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth on Pablo Sandoval’s RBI single and Angel Reyes’ sacrifice fly, Cade Gotta added an RBI double in the fifth, and Rayder Ascanio extended the lead with a producer single in the eighth chapter.
Each Gotta and Mexican reinforcement Jesse Castillo walked with full trails to drive in runs and round out the winners’ offense.
Navegantes and Caribes will play this Tuesday a seventh and final match to define the 2022 champion of the circuit, and also win the right to represent Venezuela in the Caribbean Series that will be held from January 28 to February 3 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. .
