South Korean authorities have launched an investigation into the crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216, which occurred on Sunday at Muan airport. The Boeing 737-8AS aircraft, carrying 181 people, crashed upon landing, resulting in 179 confirmed deaths and only two survivors.
Causes of the Accident
According to Muan fire chief Lee Jeong-hyun, the cause of the accident is presumed to have been a bird strike combined with adverse weather conditions. However, the exact cause will be announced after a joint investigation.
Rescue Operations
Emergency services deployed dozens of vehicles to the scene, and images broadcast by local television show the entire plane burned, except for the tail, and bodies wrapped in blue shrouds that were evacuated on stretchers.
Jeju Air’s Safety Record
This is the first fatal accident in the history of Jeju Air, founded in 2005. The airline has a relatively good safety record, with only one previous incident in 2007, when a Bombardier Q400 from its fleet skidded off the runway at the Busan-Gimhae airport, leaving a dozen minor injuries.
