Montevideo Demolition Worker Crushed By Falling Wall In Fatal Excavator Accident

A 51-year-old worker died Monday afternoon following a workplace accident. The incident happened at the junction of María Orticochea and General Eugenio Garzón Avenue. This area sits on the border between the Belvedere and Sayago neighborhoods.

The man was operating a backhoe machine during a demolition project. A wall suddenly collapsed, crushing him. This particular site is where a new shopping center and apartment towers are planned for future construction.

Víctor Fagúndez, who heads Public Relations for the Firefighters, provided details to News Agency. He confirmed that the company itself made the initial call for help. When his team arrived, they found the structure had fallen on top of the machine’s cabin. The worker was already deceased at that point. Firefighters then secured the entire area. Their immediate tasks were to recover the victim’s body and to start investigation work.

Other operators were also on site, working with different machines. Fortunately, none of these other workers were in danger. Fagúndez noted that the area was properly protected. Now, a specialized unit from the Firefighters, responsible for Accident Investigation, is reviewing the details. They are looking closely at the safety protocols, the overall safety plan, and the specific demolition plan. All these elements are crucial for any such construction project.

Meanwhile, personnel from the Scientific Police are also at the scene. They are diligently surveying the entire area to gather all necessary evidence.
