Reflexes

  • Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the 49 kg category at the Tokyo Olympics and is also a former world champion.
  • The Commonwealth Senior Championship was to be held in Singapore last year, but could not be held due to Corona.
  • Mirabai Chanu has decided to withdraw from both events on the advice of coach Vijay Sharma.

New Delhi. Silver Olympic weightlifter Mirabai Chanu withdrew from the World Championships and Senior Commonwealth Championships to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from December 7-17. Mirabai, who won a silver medal in the women’s 49kg category at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year, is also a former world champion. He withdrew from both events on the advice of India’s head coach, Vijay Sharma.

“Our main goal (for the World Championships and the Commonwealth Senior Championships) is to have the lifters qualify for the Commonwealth Games next year,” Sharma told PTI. He said: “We had sent her Meera’s name for the competition, but her performance is not as good as it is now. We are working a bit more on his starting technique. She is an Olympic medalist, so her qualification for the Commonwealth Games is not an issue.

The Commonwealth Senior Championship was to be held last year (in Singapore) but could not be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also be held at the same location in conjunction with the World Championship. Twenty lifters from the country, including youth Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Lalrinnunga, will participate in the tournament. Sharma said: “Meera has no problem, but it is a strategic decision. He has been participating in contests continuously for the past five years.

However, Mirabai had said in an interview with PTI last month that she faces difficulty lifting weights and is in pain. The Asian Championship gold medalist, Membrane Dalbehera, will represent India in the Mirabai category at this competition. She used to compete in the 45kg category before.
