Milagros Chamorro Case: New Filing Complicates Alleged Rape Investigation

A tragic event unfolded at the Casmu sanatorium, where 29-year-old Milagros Chamorro took her own life while waiting for psychiatric help. This devastating incident is linked to a traumatic experience from her past – a violent assault she suffered at the hands of five males in Maldonado when she was just 15.

The case took a new turn recently. A lawyer for one of the accused individuals submitted a document to the prosecution, claiming that the assault occurred in July, not September 2010, as previously stated. This new information also points to a different location for the crime.

Santiago Mirande, the lawyer representing Chamorro’s family, believes this new evidence works against them, introducing a fresh element to the case. He expressed concerns that this development could impact the accountability of not just the accused but also their parents. One of the individuals involved, who was the only adult at the time of the assault, has come forward with a document that contains untruths, according to Mirande.

This move by the accused has been labeled as a shocking procedural misstep. Without being summoned, the individual has presented a document that not only contains falsehoods already contradicted by their own statements in the press but also attempts to shift the timeline and location of the assault. The accused now claims the event happened at a different apartment, allegedly owned by one of their family members, thus potentially implicating them further in the case.

Mirande highlights the contradictions in the accused’s statement, including an attempt to alter the date of the incident to avoid acknowledging that one of the perpetrators was already an adult at the time. By suggesting that the assault occurred at a different location, allegedly owned by a parent of one of the accused, the individual may have inadvertently implicated not only themselves but also their family members. If proven that an adult allowed minors to gather with drugs, alcohol, and other underage individuals, that person could be held responsible. The latest development, according to Mirande, has potentially increased the liability of the accused and their family members.
