Mexico’s power grid has faced significant challenges in recent years, including massive blackouts that have affected millions of people. The country’s growing demand for electricity has put a strain on its energy infrastructure, highlighting the need for new and innovative solutions.
The Earth is a vast source of energy, and one type of energy that has the potential to meet Mexico’s growing needs is geothermal energy. This energy is generated by the heat from the Earth’s core and can be used to produce electricity, provide heating and cooling, and support various industrial processes.
Mexico’s Geothermal Potential
Mexico is home to a significant geothermal resource, with over 1,600 thermal springs identified across 26 states. The country has been harnessing geothermal energy since 1959, with five operational geothermal power plants located in Baja California, Michoacán, Puebla, Baja California Sur, and a private plant in Nayarit. However, these plants currently operate at a relatively low capacity, generating around 1% to 2% of the country’s total electricity.
The Mexican government has recognized the potential of geothermal energy and has proposed a new Geothermal Law aimed at updating and simplifying the regulatory framework governing the use of geothermal resources. This law is expected to improve the permitting process, enhance project registration, and expand the applications of geothermal energy beyond electricity generation.
The government’s energy transition strategy includes increasing the use of geothermal energy, with a target of reaching at least 1,464 megawatts (MW) of geothermal capacity by 2050. This would not only help reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels but also provide a stable and reliable source of renewable energy.
Beyond Electricity Generation
Geothermal energy has a range of applications beyond electricity generation, including:
- Urban heating and cooling
- Industrial drying
- Aquaculture
- Food preservation
By leveraging these opportunities, Mexico can maximize the benefits of its geothermal resources and create new economic opportunities.
The government has also proposed reorganizing the country’s energy sector, with the aim of creating a more efficient and centralized planning framework. This would involve integrating the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) under a single structure, enabling better coordination and decision-making.
With its significant geothermal potential, Mexico is well-positioned to become a leader in the global energy transition. By investing in geothermal energy and implementing supportive policies, the country can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, enhance energy security, and create a more sustainable future.
