Melbourne CBD bar firebombing: 3 arrested as hospitality arson wave escalates

Melbourne’s nightlife sector is facing an escalating crisis. At approximately 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, emergency services rushed to a bar engulfed in flames on ACDC Lane. The incident targeted Bar Bambi. It is the latest strike in a string of firebombings heavily suspected to be driven by an ongoing illicit tobacco turf war.

City Council staff spotted a suspicious vehicle via surveillance cameras near the intersection of Flinders and ACDC Lanes. They alerted authorities. Police arrived at the scene. Two suspects fled on foot. Officers pursued them and made the arrests shortly after. A third suspect was later found in a nearby laneway and apprehended. All three men are currently in police custody. Detectives are scheduled to interview them today.

The underlying motive is officially unconfirmed. Targeted venues have not reported direct extortion attempts. They have received no explicit threats. Yet the ongoing pattern of paid attacks against Melbourne hospitality venues has devastated owners. Seven licensed establishments across South Yarra, Southbank, and the CBD were hit in a single week in April 2026.

Authorities are now fighting a troubling new operational tactic within this crime wave. Organized syndicates are explicitly outsourcing the arson. They hire young individuals and pay them between several hundred to a thousand dollars per firebombing. This proxy method effectively shields the syndicate organizers from direct police apprehension.
