Metropolitan Public Health Workers Strike Over Polyclinic Robberies, Assaults

Healthcare workers across the Metropolitan Primary Care Network have gone on strike. This protest started on Wednesday and will last until midnight. It follows two disturbing acts of violence against staff. The Public Health Officials’ Federation (FFSP) called for the strike. They are demanding immediate action from authorities to protect medical personnel. Only emergency services are still operating.

One incident involved an armed robbery at a polyclinic in Lezica. Armed individuals stormed the San José Polyclinic. This clinic is part of the Sayago Health Center. They forced staff members to the back of the building. There, the robbers stole all of their belongings.

The FFSP released a statement after this event. They expressed deep disgust and anger. They called this armed robbery a very serious situation. “This act violates not only the security of workers,” the statement read, “but also that of public health system users.” The union declared the incident “unacceptable.” They demanded immediate responses from officials. They also called for safe working conditions for health staff. The union wants a quick explanation of what happened. They also want protection for their colleagues.

“We stand up for the well-being of our workers,” the statement continued. “Violence against those who care for people’s health is a line that must not be crossed. Enough violence, we want to work safely!” The San José Polyclinic is located at Guanahani street, at the corner of Luis Lasagna.

Attack on a Worker in La Cruz

The FFSP also showed support for a worker at the Yanicelli Polyclinic. This clinic belongs to the La Cruz de Carrasco Health Center. The pharmacy worker was physically attacked while on duty. The union noted that this was not the first time this worker faced violence.

“This violent event adds to the very serious assault at the San José Polyclinic,” the FFSP said in another statement. “It shows a lack of basic safety guarantees in public health.” The federation stressed that no worker should face violence on the job. They reminded everyone about the ongoing strike.

The union ended its message with a strong call. “We ask all workers to stay united and strong,” the statement concluded. “We must defend the lives, health, and safety of those who provide public care every day. No more violence in public health!” This second polyclinic is at Camino Carrasco street, at the corner of Roberto Berro.
