Melbourne Anzac Day vandalism: Two women face charges over RSL graffiti

An escalating wave of anti-colonial monument desecration across Victoria has hit Melbourne’s Anzac Day observances. Vandals targeted multiple Returned and Services League (RSL) sub-branches overnight. Sites in Heidelberg, Reservoir, and Fawkner were covered in anti-veteran and anti-Australian Defence Force slurs.

Police apprehended two women, aged 20 and 22, after a brief foot chase at the Heidelberg RSL around 1:45 AM local time. They face charges of criminal damage, marking graffiti without consent, and possessing a graffiti implement, according to a report by The Economic Times detailing the arrests. Both women are currently out on bail. They will appear at the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on May 19.

The Reservoir RSL condemned the attacks as disgraceful. Attendees arriving for their traditional Gunfire Breakfast were exposed to the graffiti. The community response was rapid. The Fawkner RSL confirmed local residents immediately pledged to clean the paint and restore the memorial stone. “Today, as always, Reservoir stood together,” the branch stated.

How the Monument Defacement Wave Drives RSL Surveillance Demands

The Anzac Day vandalism is part of a coordinated campaign of monument desecration throughout early 2026. Prior to Australia Day in January, historical sites in Flagstaff Gardens and a St Kilda Captain Cook statue were defaced with “land back” slogans, as The Guardian reported. This sustained targeting forces RSL Victoria and local politicians to demand a severe policy shift within the world of local heritage protection.

Veterans groups are pushing for mandatory harsher penalties for defacing war memorials. They also want permanent surveillance networks installed at sacred sites. The Heidelberg arrests establish a physical test case for these proposed enforcement measures. Local authorities must now process these charges against a backdrop of intense public scrutiny regarding protest limits.
