Andrew McCutchen opened the game with a home run, while Luis Urías hit a solo homer and added a big play defensively, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Washington Nationals 5-1 on Saturday.
Brandon Woodruff gave up one run in an effective six innings.
McCutchen found the first offer from Patrick Corbin (0-7) and sent the ball to the Nationals’ bullpen. It was the 20th time in his career and the second this season that he has homered in the first at-bat of a game.
Mexican Urías hit a home run with two outs in the fifth inning. Three batters later, Keston Hiura hit a two-run single.
On defense, Urías was master of the first inning. He caught a line drive and a ground ball.
For the final out, the Sonora State shortstop raced back and slid to catch a treacherous fly ball to left-center field with his back to the diamond.
Woodruff (5-2) gave up a homer to Lane Thomas in the second inning, as well as four other hits. He dished out six strikeouts.
For the Nationals, the Venezuelan César Hernández 4-1. The Dominicans Juan Soto 3-0, Nelson Cruz 3-1, Maikel Franco 4-1. Cuban Yadiel Hernández 4-0.
