Mastrobuoni homers, Licey wins and splits with the Giants

Mastrobuoni jonronea, Licey gana y divide con los Gigantes

The Tigres del Licey defeated the Gigantes del Cibao 5-4 to divide honors in the doubleheader held this Tuesday at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal stadium in the continuation of the Tomás Troncoso fall-winter baseball tournament.

The Tigers improved to 21-9, while the Giants returned to play .500 (16-16).

Ofreidy Gomez (1-0) was the winning pitcher, Derrick Loop (1-2) the losing pitcher and Jairo Asencio pitched in the ninth for his eighth save of the season. Brody Koerner started for the Licey with a labor of 2.2 innings, 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned with one walk and two strikeouts. He was followed on the mound by César Cabral, Andrew Pérez, Antonio Santos, Ulises Joaquín, Nelvin Correa, Ofreidy Gómez and Asencio. Richelson Peña started for the Giants and in 5.1 innings he allowed 4 hits, 3 rounds, 2 earned with one strikeout. Huascar Brazobán, Derrick Loop and Enrique Burgos completed the task for the San Francisco de Macorís team. The Giants scored three runs in the second inning off Koerner and capped off by an RBI double by Eric Filia. El Licey scored two against Peña in the fifth when they hit a double by Taylor Kohlwey and a home run by Miles Mastrobuoni. The Tigers tied it in the sixth on singles by Sergio Alcántara and Ronny Mauricio along with a throwing error by center fielder Luis Liberato. Another double by Filia in the seventh against Nelvin Correa drove in Liberato (walk) so that the visitors retook the lead. However, the Tigers scored two in the bottom of that inning against the Loop by walking Mel Rojas Jr, replaced by pinch runner Jordy Barley and back-to-back singles by Michael De La Cruz and Emilio Bonifacio. Mastrobuoni hit his home run, Kohlwey hit a double and a single and Alcántara, a couple of hits for the winners. Filia gave two doubles and a single and Iván Castillo, three hits for the Giants. Los Tigres return to action this Wednesday night when they visit the Estrellas Orientales at the Tetelo Vargas stadium in San Pedro de Macorís starting at 7:30 p.m.
