Manchester United join City’s bid for Kalvin Phillips rejected

In a move that could change the dynamics of the Premier League, Manchester United have set their sights on Kalvin Phillips as their top transfer target for next summer. The England international, who is currently with Manchester City, has struggled with limited action under Pep Guardiola since his move from Leeds United.

Phillips, once a key figure under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds, moved to Manchester City following promotion to the Premier League. However, his performance was overshadowed by players such as Rodri, John Stones and Manuel Akanji, leaving Phillips in a secondary position in midfield. Despite speculation about his future, Phillips has struggled to find a place in Guardiola’s plans, leading to rumors of his possible exit in the January transfer window.

Manchester United are still looking for a new midfielder

While Juventus, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are proving to be serious contenders for Phillips’ signing, Manchester United are a surprise addition to the list. The Old Trafford club reportedly see Phillips as the ideal successor to Casemiro, particularly given the Brazilian’s potential departure next summer.

Although Phillips has not played a prominent role at Manchester City, Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag is a keen admirer of the player and sees him as the piece that would fit perfectly into the team’s system. Although Phillips has long been linked to the Etihad until 2028, the Red Devils are determined to make a bold bid to take him over in the 2024 summer transfer window.

With Phillips’ situation at the Etihad at a critical juncture and his participation limited this season, the England midfielder’s future could take him to Old Trafford, where Manchester United are looking to strengthen their midfield for next season. The departure of investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe from City could be a key factor in this potential move, as the Ineos boss wants to focus on recruiting and developing local talent.
