A disturbing incident occurred on Wednesday night at the Church of San Carlos in Maldonado, where a 49-year-old man intentionally crashed his car into the church door, causing significant damage. The event took place around 11:30 pm in the church located at the intersection of Sarandí and July 18 streets.
According to police reports, when they arrived at the scene, they found the driver of a damaged Chevrolet Aveo, who claimed he needed to see a priest. It’s worth noting that the driver appeared to be in a state of crisis, and his behavior was deemed erratic.
As a result, the driver was taken into custody and referred to a health center for medical evaluation and care. The Prosecutor’s Office, specifically the 4th shift, took charge of the case and ordered a mental health specialist to diagnose the individual. Following this assessment, the case was passed on to the Justice system, which subsequently decided that the man required hospitalization in a mental health institution in Montevideo. This decision reflects the complexity of the situation, highlighting the need for both legal and medical intervention to address the man’s actions and ensure his well-being.
