A man received probation while a woman faces house arrest after making fake bomb threats to shopping centers in Montevideo. Police arrested both suspects Thursday, with court rulings issued Friday following their hearings with prosecutors and a judge.
Sentences handed down
The male caller got six months of probation, according to case sources speaking to News Agency. His female counterpart must serve 45 days under house arrest pending further investigation. She’ll remain confined until final sentencing.
How the threats unfolded
- The man dialed emergency services Saturday, claiming a bomb was planted at Montevideo Shopping.
- The woman called the next day, warning of an explosive device at Punta Carretas Shopping.
Both locations evacuated immediately. Police seized cellphones during raids and identified a third suspect still at large for similar threats.
Broader crackdown
Authorities separately arrested another man suspected of hacking government websites. The rulings on the bomb threat cases came just hours before firefighters evacuated Montevideo’s Medical School following yet another hoax call Friday afternoon.
