Nostalgia Night, a time for many to revisit cherished memories, brought a significant increase in road activity across the Maldonado department this past Sunday night and into early Monday morning. Local authorities anticipated the celebrations. They launched a major operation to ensure everyone’s safety on the roads.
The Maldonado Municipality reported a wide-reaching effort. Inspectors checked 1,813 vehicles during this special night. From these checks, 139 fines were issued. Additionally, 61 vehicles were temporarily removed from the road. The municipality emphasized that public safety remained a top priority.
A core part of the operation involved testing drivers. Inspectors conducted 1,796 alcohol tests. Out of these, 27 drivers tested positive, which is about 1.5% of those checked. Controls also looked for other substances. For instance, 26 tests were done for THC, the active compound in cannabis. Six of these tests came back positive, representing a higher rate of 23%.
The vehicles that were stopped included both cars and motorcycles. Of the 61 retained vehicles, 39 were motorcycles and 22 were cars. Among the 139 fines applied, 27 also resulted in retained documentation for the drivers. Beyond regular vehicles, authorities also focused on larger transport. Eleven heavy transport vehicles were inspected, and one of these received a penalty.
Despite the extensive safety measures, the night was not entirely without incident. The municipality confirmed one traffic accident occurred, linked to Nostalgia Night. This incident resulted in one person sustaining injuries. To manage such a large-scale event, the municipality deployed 240 inspectors. These officers covered the entire department, working to keep everyone safe as people celebrated.
