Thousands gathered under the evening sky at Merdeka Square, their voices rising in a powerful show of unity. This large rally, named “Sumud Nusantara,” was more than just a gathering. It marked the start of a brave mission: sending a fleet of relief ships to Gaza. The air buzzed with anticipation and strong feelings.
Against this backdrop, Anwar Ibrahim, the nation’s Prime Minister, made a significant announcement. He declared an additional 100 million ringgit in aid for Palestinians. This new pledge, roughly 770 million baht, builds on the 100 million ringgit the government had already set aside in 2023. It shows a deep commitment to the people of Gaza, who are facing immense hardship.
“Tonight, I announce we will provide another 100 million ringgit,” the Prime Minister stated firmly. He made it clear that this support was not tied to any political party or group. “This is the common voice of the Malaysian people,” Anwar emphasized to the cheering crowd. He detailed the many ways his country has been helping. This includes sending volunteers and religious leaders, treating injured people, and providing education for Palestinian children living there.
The Sumud Nusantara relief fleet is part of a larger international effort, the Global Sumud Flotilla. Its main goal is to deliver much-needed aid to Gaza. Right now, over half a million people there are struggling with severe hunger. This starvation is a direct result of the blockade imposed by Israel. The mission plans to challenge this naval blockade. By doing so, it hopes to open up safe routes for more humanitarian supplies to reach Gaza.
This bold mission is being led by Malaysia, working with eight other countries. The exact number of ships joining the fleet is still unknown. The journey will happen in two stages. The first group of ships will leave on August 31, followed by a second group on September 4. Ships from Southeast Asia will first head to Spain. This will be an important stop before they continue towards Gaza. Another set of ships will make their way to Tunisia. There, they will meet up with the Southeast Asian ships for the final leg of the journey.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been a vocal leader regarding the situation in Palestine. He often uses global platforms to criticize Western governments. He argues their lack of action has allowed Israel to continue its attacks on Gaza. Last year, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) even suggested that Israel’s actions might amount to genocide. This investigation is still ongoing.
Anwar expressed his strong belief in justice for the Palestinian people. “Justice will surely come one day,” he said, “when countries dare to speak out against the cruelty of the Israeli Zionist regime.” He praised nations like Brazil, Spain, and South Africa for taking such a stand. The Prime Minister ended his speech with a heartfelt promise. “We will always stand by you,” he affirmed to the Palestinians. His words were met with thunderous applause and chants of “Long live Palestine!” from the passionate crowd.
