Madrid-Barça Rivalry is Over

Unai Simon was the star of the show in “Good Night and Good Goals” just a week after his name was in the headlines due to a mistake he made against Croatia, but his stop and recovery were crucial. The Athletic footballer reviewed the current events of the national team and his club on sports radio.

Simon wanted to start by referring to the most popular image from the match between Luis de la Fuente’s team and Croatia – the hug between Carvajal and Lamine Yamal. “Here, we are all united by the same objective, from a veteran player to one who is just starting out. It means our team. There is a very good vibe in the national team. We are a very united team. That rivalry that existed before between Real Madrid and Barcelona no longer exists,” he recognized.

Another issue of the week was the evaluation of Spain. Many people placed it far from the favorites, but the reality is that the national team’s debut is on par with the best in the tournament. Simon is clear: “We are very good. We would like to be valued more. Marketing is something outside, we know that we have a great team.”

Simon, who never hides his emotions, spoke about the mistake that could have cost his teammate Rodri the red card: “I would have been very angry if Rodri was expelled because of me,” said a goalkeeper who has saved penalties in three different final phases with his national team.

Simon, who is in one of the best moments of his career, established himself in the Spanish team for three tournaments now and has won the cup with Athletic and an individual award many years later: “I am especially excited to collect the Zamora de Marca award and pick up the Iribar baton,” he said.
