Dodgers de Los Angeles retirarán el número de 34 de Fernando Valenzuela

The Los Angeles Dodgers will retire the number 34 worn by Mexican pitcher Fernando Valenzuela during a three-day celebration scheduled for the middle of this year.

Valenzuela was part of two World Series winning teams. He was voted Rookie of the Year in 1981, in which he also won the Fall Classic and Cy Young trophy.

The Mexican was selected to the All-Star Game six times during his 11 seasons with the Dodgers, from 1980 to 1990.

The tributes will take place Aug. 11-13, during a series in which the Dodgers host Colorado.

Valenzuela will join a select list of retired Dodgers players including Pee Wee Reese, Tommy Lasorda, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Jim Gilliam, Don Sutton, Walter Alston, Sandy Koufax, Roy Campanella, Jackie Robinson and Don Drysdale.

“It is a great honor to be part of a group that includes so many legends,” Valenzuela said. “But so is the support that the fans have given me as a player and in my work with the Dodgers. This is for them too.”
