Licey won a crown, but lost money

Licey ganó corona, pero perdió dinero

Nothing is so good that it does not have something bad, this premise fits perfectly with the statements of Ricardo Ravelo Jana, president of the Tigres del Licey, who said that the team had economic losses during its participation in the Gran Caracas 2023 Caribbean Series, in which they lifted their 11th title as a team and number 22 for the Dominican Republic.

He did not specify the amount, but said they did it knowingly.

“Nothing is won, we know what we are going for and we do it that way,” Ravelo responded to the question from the Dominican delegation that participated in the Caribbean Series.

“For the Dominican teams, a Caribbean Series always costs more money and especially for us, who have a larger team than the other teams, so we need to find a formula to make the event more profitable,” said the president of the Licey.

He added that the expenses assumed by the Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation in air tickets for the teams, hotel stays and transportation for an assigned number of people per delegation, were exceeded by 40%, including two invited players, several coaches in the same condition, relatives and friends of the players and several people from the operations staff, who joined as a merit to their work in the local tournament.

They moved 250 million pesos

In economic matters, the 2022-2023 tournament of the Dominican Baseball League was positive for the blue team, since with its income it was able to cover the entire budget for the season and there was even money left over.

“We had more than 250 million pesos in income, we did super well in the season, we produced what the players are worth without a problem and at the end of the tournament, more money could be distributed than what was stipulated.”

Ravelo said that the Licey’s finances are positive, they are self-sufficient and have no outstanding loans of any kind.

He gave credit to the good marketing of the blue team, the most winner in local baseball with 23 titles, since they have the power to generate more income than other franchises with the same or higher expenses.

The statements by the president of the Licey were delivered during a visit to the Actualidad Deportiva space of the Listín Diario, by sports editor Héctor J. Cruz and editor Marcos Nivar.

billion pesos
The president of the Licey said that the six teams that make up the league must be moving more than 1,000 million pesos annually.

Vitellio Mejia
Ravelo considers that Vitelio Mejía, president of Lidom, has earned the right to remain in his position, due to the good work he has done in charge of the institution.
