Lhyfe plans to restore oxygen to the oceans while producing green hydrogen

Life published a scientific article aimed at alerting science, institutions and industry to the need to re-oxygenate the oceans: “The global energy transition offers new opportunities to mitigate coastal hypoxia: do we know enough?”

“Given potential impacts such as loss of marine biodiversity, alteration of biogeochemical and microbiological processes, impact on millions of coastal jobs, as well as protein supplies for more than 3 billion people, the loss of oxygen in the ocean will raise alarm,” especially as solutions begin to emerge to be signed off.

– By publishing a scientific article, Dr. Patricia Handmann invited three interested communities to coordinate their efforts to accelerate research and implementation of solutions.

Lhyfe is a French company founded in 2017 dedicated to the production of green and renewable hydrogen. The aim is to decarbonize industry and mobility by developing innovative solutions for the production, storage and distribution of this clean fuel.

What is green hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is a fuel produced by electrolyzing water using renewable energy such as wind or solar. It is a clean, sustainable fuel that produces no CO2 emissions, making it an attractive alternative to fossil fuels.

Lhyfe designs, installs and operates systems for the production of green hydrogen on an industrial scale. The company offers tailored solutions for various industries, including industry, transportation, energy and mobility.

What are Lhyfe’s achievements?

  • First industrial green hydrogen plant in the world: In 2021, Lhyfe inaugurated the world’s first industrial green hydrogen production facility directly connected to a wind farm.
  • First offshore pilot platform for green hydrogen: In 2022, Lhyfe launched the world’s first pilot platform for the production of green hydrogen at sea.
  • International expansion: Lhyfe is expanding its activities internationally with projects in France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Denmark.

Green hydrogen has the potential to become a major energy source in the future and Lhyfe is at the forefront of the development of this technology. Their work is critical to the transition to a decarbonized economy and has the potential to contribute to a more sustainable future.

Oxygenation of the oceans is urgently needed

The oceans are the lungs of the planet and absorb much of the CO2 we emit. However, due to global warming and pollution, oxygen levels in the oceans have declined significantly in recent decades.

What are the consequences of deoxygenation?

The lack of oxygen has serious consequences for the health of the oceans. It causes the death of fish and other marine animals, destroys marine ecosystems and reduces the oceans’ ability to absorb CO2.

What does Lhyfe suggest?

Lhyfe proposes using oxygen as a byproduct of green hydrogen production to re-oxygenate the oceans. The company has developed an innovative system that allows oxygen to be reintroduced to the areas most affected by oxygen deprivation.

What are the benefits of reoxygenation?

Ocean reoxygenation has several benefits:

  • Improves Ocean Health: Reoxygenation allows fish and other marine animals to thrive, which in turn benefits the entire ecosystem.
  • Protect marine biodiversity: Reoxygenation helps protect endangered marine species and restore damaged marine ecosystems.
  • Fighting climate change: Oxygen-enriched oceans can absorb more CO2 from the atmosphere, helping to fight climate change.

What can we do to help?

We can all contribute to re-oxygenating the oceans:

  • We can support initiatives who develop innovative solutions for the reoxygenation of the oceans.
  • Reduce our carbon footprint: We can reduce our CO2 emissions to reduce pressure on the oceans.
  • Consume sustainable products: We can choose products that come from sustainable fishing practices and do not contribute to marine pollution.

Oxygenating the oceans is an urgent task that requires everyone’s action. By supporting initiatives that do this and adopt sustainable habits, we can help protect this vital resource for future generations.
