Lebanon: tensions remain high in Beirut

In Lebanon, tensions do not come down on Friday, October 15. The day before in Beirut, clashes took place after a demonstration organized by Hezbollah sympathizers against Judge Tarek Bitar, in charge of the investigation into the explosion at the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020.

On Thursday October 14, clashes took place after a demonstration in Beirut, Lebanon. Shots were exchanged and six people died. The coffin of one of the victims was carried at arm’s length by Hezbollah sympathizers on Friday. Near the courthouse, we can still see the damage with bullet holes on the walls of buildings. Faced with its violence, American, Russian and French diplomacy calls for de-escalation.

It is hitherto undetermined shootings which are at the origin of this violence in the capital of the country. During this demonstration, Hezbollah supporters took to the streets to demand the departure of Judge Tarek Bitar. The latter is in charge of the investigation into the explosion at the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020. The magistrate particularly wishes to summon senior Hezbollah officials.
