The reason for the tension between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan?

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan came into existence in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Earlier there used to be friendship between the two, but then later tension started on the border. About half of the 970-kilometre (600 mi) border between the two countries is yet to be demarcated. There are many areas between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan which have not been demarcated permanently. These areas are claimed by both the countries, due to which there have been clashes many times in the past as well. In the year 2021, there was a similar conflict between these two countries, in which at least 50 people died.

tension between the two over water

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan face acute water shortage. Most of both the countries are dry desert. It is cold here but the natural sources of water are very less. In such a situation, there is a dispute over the water of the rivers flowing between the two countries. There have been many clashes between them over the water bodies, ponds and lakes present in the border area. Due to the lack of proper division of the border, the first conflict started between the citizens of both countries, in which the country’s armies also joined later.
