  • 48 loudspeakers were installed on the wall

Taiwan China War: How would you feel if someone around you played music at full volume and never turned it off? And if it continues like this for decades, then it looks like some kind of torture. But Taiwan has adopted this strategy against China. In fact, the Taiwanese government used it in a propaganda war on Qomoy Island. This strategy is known as Kinmen. Psychological warfare has continued under this strategy for more than two decades. In which music was played every day for 24 hours a day. Taiwan erected a ten meter high loudspeaker on the side of China’s mainland.

Music was played on loudspeakers either in Taiwanese language or messages were heard for Chinese soldiers. In these messages the soldiers were asked to switch sides. The number of loudspeakers was not one or two but a full 48. These were mounted on a very strong concrete wall, known as the Beshan Relay Wall. The loudspeakers were very large in size and loud. Their voice could be heard up to 25 km away. It was a kind of psychological warfare, which disturbed the people on both sides. The psychological war ended when the US recognized China in 1979 and the balance of power in the region was changed.

Taiwan’s island for a long time

The island on which the loudspeakers were installed was made up of several smaller archipelagos. Its distance was less than 10 kilometers from the coast of China. The island comes under the sovereignty of Taiwan. It has been under Taiwan since 1949 when the Nationalist troops of Chiang Kai-shek were expelled from the mainland by Mao Zedong’s Communists. In the same year a very fierce battle took place on the island. In which the Kuomintang stopped communist troops from occupying Taiwan. The geographical situation created at that time is still intact today.

When the Taiwan Strait crisis broke out in 1954 and 1958, the island also witnessed conflict between the Nationalists and the Communists. After this conflict, the Chinese Communists used to fire in the odd days and the Taiwanese Nationalists in the even days. During this, military equipment and soldiers were being targeted in the attacks. Whereas most of the bombs had propaganda-leaflets. These included pictures and messages. Leaflets tossed out from Taiwan carried a picture of a laughing Chiang Kai-shek, a fleeing Chinese soldier and young Taiwanese getting married.

Why is there tension now?

The conflict between China and Taiwan is still going on. China’s military drills continued around Taiwan on Sunday, four days after US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit. The Chinese military said the aim is to practice long-range air and ground strikes. Taiwan has said that it is receiving continuous information about the operation of Chinese aircraft, ships and drones around the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwan Strait separates China and Taiwan. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s state-run Central News Agency said that Taiwan’s military would conduct exercises in southern Pingtung County on Tuesday and Thursday in response to Chinese military exercises.

China considers Taiwan its territory. At the same time, he has been saying for a long time that he can annex Taiwan by force if necessary. He has been opposing the visit of foreign officials to Taiwan. China is angered by the visit of Pelosi, who left Taiwan on Wednesday. It was the first visit to Taiwan by a current speaker of the US House of Representatives in nearly 25 years.
