Caracas.- Former Vice President of Ecuador Jorge Glas was again transferred to the maximum security prison “La Roca” in Guayaquil, Guayas province, after being released from the hospital where he had been admitted since Monday.

Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, leader of the Citizen Revolution (RC) movement to which Glas is a member, announced the news via his X account.

The former president released a video in which one can see the heavy security operation launched to bring the former vice president back to prison. “Fortunately he is not being persecuted politically,” said Correa ironically.

Previously, the National Service for Comprehensive Care of Adults Deprived of Liberty and Juvenile Offenders (SNAI), the body responsible for prisons in Ecuador, reported that later this Tuesday “in strict compliance with the security regulations, Jorge G. will be released to the Guayas Deprivation of Liberty Center (CPL) No. 3, where the protection of the physical integrity of the above-mentioned person deprived of his liberty will be guaranteed.”

On Monday, Glas was admitted to the military hospital and then to the Guayaquil Naval Hospital. The SNAI mentioned in a statement that it was determined that the former officer “suffered possible decompensation due to refusing to eat food.”

However, the former vice president’s defense had access to a police report that stated that “a diagnosis of a self-induced deep coma is suspected, caused by the use of anti-anxiety, antidepressant and sedative medications.”

This Tuesday, while Glas was still in hospital, Luisa González, former presidential candidate of the RC, said that “unfortunately” there was no precise information about his health.

Glas was arrested last Friday evening when an contingent of Ecuadorian state forces broke into the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he had sought refuge since December last year.

After his removal from diplomatic headquarters, the former official was transferred to the maximum security prison “La Roca”.
