The Jet-Blue airline canceled its flights to Puerto Rico from the Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez, in Santo Domingo, due to Hurricane Fiona passing through that island, whose winds are already being felt on the neighboring island.

Dominican Airports XXI Aerodom explained that the canceled Jet-Blue flights are those marked with the numbers B6 2538 and B6 538 leaving and returning from San Juan, Puerto Rico

The authorities of Puerto Rico announced the cancellation of all flight operations leaving and arriving in the country, as a consequence of the atmospheric phenomenon whose effects began to be felt this Sunday on the island.

Passengers who had made reservations to travel to Puerto Rico this Sunday on the airline’s canceled flights had to return home to wait for the bad weather to dissipate so they could leave.

According to the report, in the next few hours other flight operations could be canceled as the hours progress and the passage through the national territory of Hurricane Fiona, which has sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour, approaches.

Some of the stranded travelers reacted surprised to the news about the cancellation of their flight by the employees of the Jet-Blue airline counters, at the Las Américas International Airport.

“I didn’t know there was this situation, I just found out about the hurricane,” said a young Puerto Rican girl who was on vacation in the country, accompanied by her boyfriend, and it was not possible to identify them.

The National Hurricane Center announced this Sunday that Fiona has already become a hurricane, which represents a greater danger for both Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

On his side, President Luis Abinader instructed the Civil Defense to carry out mandatory evacuations in the vulnerable areas of the 13 provinces that are on red alert and the 9 on yellow alert, given the imminent passage of Fiona.

Meanwhile, the director of the National Meteorology Office (Onamet), Gloria Ceballos, indicated that Fiona has maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour.
