Jerusalem celebrates the Gay Pride march with a major police deployment

Jerusalén celebra la marcha del Orgullo Gay con un importante despliegue policial

Thousands of people participated in the 20th edition of the Gay Pride march in Jerusalem on Thursday, which was celebrated with a significant police deployment after threats received by the organizers.

Thousands of policemen were deployed "to ensure the safety of participants and public order"indicated the security forces in a statement.

According to the police, three suspects were arrested, one of them for having threatened one of the organizers of the march on social networks and the other two for transporting tear gas in their vehicle.

The president of the Israeli Parliament, Mickey Levy, who participated in the march (something unprecedented), claimed on Twitter "support for the fight of the LGBT community for equal rights".

In July 2015, an Orthodox Jew stabbed seven people during the Pride march in Jerusalem, killing teenager Shira Banki.

Israel is considered a pioneer country in the Middle East in the defense of LGBT people.

But the homosexual community suffers more discrimination in Jerusalem, a holy city for Jews, Muslims and Christians, than in Tel Aviv, reputed for its tolerance on the matter.
