A surprising measure. The Japanese financial holding company Nomura Holdings Inc., based in Tokyo, told its employees that they would no longer be allowed to smoke on the company’s premises, but also at home.
While the pandemic is actively circulating in Japan, telecommuting is still very popular. During these days at home, employees will therefore also be prohibited from smoking. If there is no way to monitor compliance with this measure, the company relies on mutual trust.
Nomura has also specified that it would not monitor its employees by teleworking, can we read in the columns of the Japan Times.
Prevent passive smoking
By prohibiting its employees from smoking, the holding tends to improve the atmosphere at work but also prevent passive smoking, so that “everyone can work in good health, with a certain energy,” said the company. By 2025, Nomura hopes to reduce the smoking rate among its employees to 12%.
Passive smoking is an increasingly worrying subject for the Japanese authorities. According to a survey published in Japan, two in ten employees have increased their consumption since working from home.
