Israel decides to remove Netanhyahu’s family escort

An Israeli parliamentary committee voted Sunday to strip the wife and adult children of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of private security, six months after Netahyanhu left office.

The decision, which takes effect on Monday, was made despite reports from Netanyahu and his family that they receive constant threats.

Netanyahu was removed from office in June after a heterogeneous coalition of political parties formed to form a government without his party, the Likud. Netanyahu, who was in command of the country for 12 consecutive years, is today the leader of the opposition and continues to have an official escort.

Under current Israeli rules, the family of a former prime minister has a driver and bodyguards for six months after leaving office. However in January, at Netanyahu’s insistence, the term was extended to one year by a ministerial committee.

On Sunday, that same committee approved accepting the Shin Bet security agency’s recommendation to return to the original six-month period.
