Israel Attacks Gaza Nasser Hospital: 15 Dead, Including Reuters, Al Jazeera Journalists

Today, August 25th, the grim toll from the conflict in the Gaza Strip grew heavier. An Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital claimed the lives of at least 15 people. Among the deceased were four journalists, working tirelessly to capture and report the unfolding events. Their deaths highlight the extreme danger faced by those delivering news from the heart of the crisis.

Eyewitnesses described a chilling sequence of events. The initial strike drew first responders, aid workers, and other journalists to the scene. Then, a second attack occurred, catching many off guard. Hossam Al-Masri, a Reuters contract photographer, was among those killed. His live video feed from Nasser Hospital suddenly went dark during the first assault. Another Reuters contract photographer, Hatem Khaled, suffered a leg injury in the second strike.

The Gaza Government Media Office later named the four journalists who died. They include Hossam Al-Masri of Reuters, and Mohammed Salama, a photographer for Al Jazeera. Mariam Abu Daqqa also perished; she reported for various news outlets, including The Independent Arabic and AP. Lastly, Moaz Abu Taha, a journalist for the NBC television network, was among the victims.

This tragedy adds to a shocking number of journalist deaths in the region. The Gaza Government Media Office states that 244 journalists have now been killed during the conflict. They called the attack a “horrific crime” and blamed Israel directly. They also held the American government and other nations accountable. The UK, Germany, and France were named as countries “involved in genocide.” The office views them as “fully responsible” for these “brutal crimes.” Separately, the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate reports over 240 Palestinian journalists have died. This is since the war began on October 7, 2023, due to Israeli fire.
