Iran: Eight dead and seven missing in avalanches

Episodes of “avalanches and blizzards” swept several people in the mountains north of Tehran on Friday, December 25. According to a provisional assessment by the authorities, eight climbers have died and at least seven people are missing, Iranian state television announced on Saturday. The media said “the research was still ongoing”.

“The bodies of eight missing climbers were found in the heights of Tehran thanks to the efforts of rescue workers and Red Crescent operations”, Mohammad Baqer Mohammadi, deputy Iranian Red Crescent operations officer, told the official news agency Irna.

State television broadcast images of the rescue: a helicopter was thus deployed at the mountains “Tochal and Kolakchal” north of the capital. In this video, Red Crescent members carry a victim of the disaster on a stretcher. A member of the rescue teams said the operations were complicated due to “bad weather and snow”.
