Íngrid Betancourt, the only woman in Colombia’s presidential race, announced this Friday that she is withdrawing her candidacy to support that of engineer Rodolfo Hernández, a populist and independent who has skyrocketed in the polls and could go to the second round.
"Today I have made the decision to support the only candidate who today can defeat the system"said Betancourt, a candidate for the Oxygen Green Party, who did not even reach 1% in the voting intention polls, in an act together with Hernández in Barranquilla, in the north of the country.
The leftist Gustavo Petro follows first in all the polls, with around 40% of the intention to vote, while Hernández has risen to third place and with 20.9%, according to the firm Invamer, he could exceed the next 29 from May to the second, the right-wing Federico "phyco" Gutiérrez, to whom this poll gives 27.1%.
