While marital rape could be criminalized, the debate is raging and some Indians are threatening a marriage strike. Angélique Forget, correspondent in India, details this hot topic in the country’s news.
For the past week, this has been the topical subject that has been agitating the Indian web. On social networks, tens of thousands of messages circulate and denounce the request made by associations which wish to penalize marital rape “in one of the most violent countries on the planet for women“, recalls Angélique Forget, correspondent in India.
For those resistant to this measure, it would give women reasons to accuse their husbands unfairly “and why not ask for a divorce“. And it didn’t take long for a movement to emerge on the internet.”He calls on men to no longer recognize marriage, to renounce this union”, explains Angélique Forget. For the time being, India is one of 32 countries in the world that does not recognize rape as a crime when it occurs in a married couple, and the country’s Penal Code considers that any relationship sex that occurs within a married couple is “necessarily consented“.
