Ilia Malinin captures 3rd consecutive World Figure Skating title following Milan Olympic collapse

Six weeks after a catastrophic eighth-place finish shattered his Olympic gold medal hopes in Milan, 21-year-old American figure skater Ilia Malinin found his redemption on Saturday. Malinin captured his third consecutive World Figure Skating Championship title in Prague, posting a massive total score of 329.40 to bury the rest of the field by a 22.73-point margin.

The “Quad God” abandoned his signature, high-risk quadruple axel to ensure a clean free skate program. The strategy paid off. Malinin safely landed five high-scoring quadruple jumps before closing his routine with a crowd-pleasing backflip. He scored 218.11 points in the free skate alone.

Shouting and punching the air in relief after the skate, Malinin addressed the arena directly. “It was really challenging, really hard but with you guys I was able to make it through,” he said, according to a detailed report released on Saturday. He previously admitted that the pressure of the Olympics had consumed him and that he replayed his mistakes constantly in the weeks leading up to the Prague event.

The Japanese duo of Yuma Kagiyama and Shun Sato secured the silver and bronze medals with scores of 306.67 and 288.54, respectively. This exactly mirrored their podium placements from the recent Milan Games. The reigning Olympic gold medalist, Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan, opted to skip the Prague competition.

Malinin’s victory cements a historic milestone in winter sports. He is now the first male skater to win three consecutive world titles since fellow American Nathan Chen accomplished the feat across 2018, 2019, and 2021.
