Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, testified behind closed doors today before a panel of Republican lawmakers who are investigating the impeachment of the president, who is accused of lying about his family’s business dealings.
“I did not involve my father in my business dealings,” Hunter said during his appearance before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committee.
In an election year, Republicans are trying to damage the Democratic president ahead of November’s presidential election, in which his most likely rival will be Donald Trump, surrounded by scandals and legal troubles.
Without providing any concrete evidencehave accused Biden of using his influence as vice president during President Barack Obama’s administration (2009-2017) to support Hunter on his trade deals with China and Ukraine.
The impeachment inquiry – dismissed by Democrats as a political maneuver to damage Biden’s election campaign – has little chance of producing actual criminal charges against the president.

Republicans have long attacked the younger Biden, who says he has overcome his crack addiction, over alleged shady dealings and have sought to link those claims to the current president.
But the impeachment inquiry ran into trouble this month when A former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, was arrested and charged with lying and fabricating false accusations Corruption against Hunter.
Smirnov alleged that each of the Bidens received a $5 million bribe that Hunter Biden demanded from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, on whose board he served, to shield it from an investigation when his father was vice president .
Federal prosecutors say Smirnov’s statements were fabricated.
