HTC ‘returned’ and announces a new smartphone: the return of the giant?

For smartphone fans, HTC is an iconic brand. But for several years now, this brand has ceased to focus on the smartphone market. Now it’s back with a new device called the U23 Pro.

By design, this is a generic smartphone that looks like many competitors. We have a flat front panel, with a pronounced chin and a central hole for the front camera. At the back we have a rectangular island for the rear cameras. The price starts at €510.

As the value itself indicates, this is a smartphone that aims to find the upper-middle-range scenario and compete head-on with the Nothing Phone (1), the POCO F5 Pro or the Google Pixel 7a. As such, it’s commanded by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, and it packs either 8 or 12GB of RAM.

The smartphone has a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The protection is Gorilla Glass Victus, and the front camera is 32 MP. On the back we find a 108 MP main camera with OIS, supported by an 8 MP ultra-wide angle sensor, 5 MP macro and 2 MP depth sensor.

HTC U23 Pro supports microSD and has a 3.5mm jack input

An interesting detail is that the smartphone comes with the possibility of memory expansion via microSD and 3.5 mm jack input. Two features that are increasingly scarce in smartphones of this price range, and that some users value.

The HTC U23 Pro has a 4600mAh battery, with 30W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. It also has reverse wireless charging. In addition, it has 5G, a fingerprint sensor on the side, Wi-Fi 6, NFC and a USB-C port.

For fans of this type of technology, the U23 Pro arrives with the Vivese app pre-installed and is guaranteed compatibility with the Vive XR Elite headphones. It is also worth noting the IP67 certification for water resistance.

Launched for now only in Taiwan, the smartphone appears in this market with a price equivalent to €510 in the 8 GB/256 GB version. Already in the 12 GB/256 GB version it jumps to €540. Now it remains to be seen if it will reach Europe.
