The toll left by Cyclone Yaku is devastating: 50 dead, thousands homeless, countless areas flooded and homes destroyed.
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte led the session of the Council of Ministers at the National Emergency Operations Center after declaring the Lima metro on “red alert” in the face of heavy rains due to the presence of Cyclone Yaku.
The balance left by this phenomenon is devastating: 50 dead, more than 7,200 homeless and countless areas flooded and houses destroyed. In addition, it caused the closure of dozens of roads and more than 20 coastal ports.
“A state of alert is declared for the entire district and platform of the Metropolitan Civil Defense of Lima around the ravines of the Rímac, Chillón and Lurín river basins“, to the point Boluarte in a message broadcast on television this Tuesday.
The measure due to Cyclone Yaku is valid for a period of 60 days
The rains particularly affected the metropolitan area of Lima on Tuesday afternoon and caused torrents to overflow in some places, and also shook the capital’s neighborhoods, such as Miraflores and San Isidro.

Boluarte explained that it is declared “on permanent alert” to the personnel and means of the Armed Forces and the Police to “serve the affected population in places where require”.
The 24-hour suspension of school and university activities in the metropolitan area of Lima, region of Lima and Callao was also informed.

“Remote work is provided in State entities with the exception of the minimum staff decided by the holder of the specifications“he added.
The president also said that there is restricted access to Jorge Chavez International Airport. “Only passengers with a boarding pass will be able to enter“, he stated.

This Wednesday morning, the President of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola, stated that “from a meteorological point of view, the worst is over” in the metropolitan area of Lima.
The rains have been intense in the north of the country since last week. The government reported that the Yaku is “a disorganized tropical cyclone” that takes place on the coasts of Peru and Ecuador, in the Pacific Ocean.
