Oxycodone is wreaking havoc in the United States. In France, the pharmacology society warns about this powerful painkiller. “With this powerful analgesic drug, from the opioid family, there is a risk of abuse and addiction which would be higher with oxycodone than with morphine”, introduces journalist and doctor Damien Mascret, present on the 19/20 set, Monday May 22. He is pointing out that “of the 11.9 million patients who were prescribed an opioid in 2021, 300,000 were oxycodone. A 738% increase between 2006 and 2017.”
“Very useful drugs”
The healthcare professional reassures and explains that “prescription is very framed in France”. “You must know the signs of misuse: if for example you increase the quantities you take, if you reduce the time between two doses or if you get high or feel a powerful psychostimulant effect after taking your treatment. Consult your doctor, you may be slipping into abuse or addiction”recommends Damien Mascret who recalls that “Opioids remain very useful drugs”.
