He turned a safe weapon into a deadly one, the judge said

The armory of the Movie of cowboys”rust“, produced by Alec Baldwin and whose cameraman was shot during filming, was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the American judiciary on Monday.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed had loaded the revolver that Baldwin was rehearsing with in October 2021 when filming on a ranch in New Mexico (southwest) turned into a tragedy: a real bullet killed camerawoman Halyna Hutchins and wounded the director.

“You were the gunsmith, the one who stood between a safe weapon and a weapon that could kill someone. Only you have turned a safe weapon into a deadly weapon,” said Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer.

“Without you, Miss Hutchins would be alive. A husband would have his partner and a little boy would have his mother.”

Gutierrez’s 10-day trial alleged that, despite being the person in charge of firearms on set, the 26-year-old repeatedly violated basic safety rules by leaving weapons unattended and allowing actors, including Baldwin, to lead them.

It was also learned that Gutierrez was responsible for the presence of six loaded cartridges – a red line in the film industry – and that he had loaded one of them into the Colt .45 used by Baldwin.

The gun went off as the actor was preparing a scene in a wooden church where Hutchins was killed and director Souza was injured.
