Haitian police will go to Turkey to search for businessman suspected of assassination

The Haitian National Police (PNH) reported this Wednesday that it has appointed three of its agents to travel to Turkey to look for the Haitian businessman Samir Handal, accused by the authorities of his country of being involved in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise el July 7th.

Police spokesman Garry Desrosiers released the information at a press conference in which he recalled that Handal, the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Port-au-Prince Prosecutor’s Office, was arrested last Sunday in Turkey.

Following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police (DCPJ) issued an international arrest warrant for Handal, transferred to Interpol, for his alleged involvement in the assassination of the president, Desrosiers said.

"As a result of this notification, the DCPJ was informed that the businessman took a flight to Turkey, from Miami (USA), with the purpose of traveling to a country in the Middle East."the spokesman said.

Desrosiers added that the FBI and the Haitian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also collaborated in Handal’s arrest.

Handal was arrested by Turkish authorities on Sunday, after arriving in that country on a flight from Miami, Haitian Foreign Minister Claude Joseph confirmed to Efe last Monday.

Last October another suspect was arrested, the Colombian Marco Antonio Palacios, who was arrested in Jamaica and has been requested in extradition by the Haitian authorities.

According to the latest official data, 44 people were arrested in Haiti for their alleged involvement in the assassination, including 12 police officers.

Among those arrested in Haiti are 18 Colombians, most of them retired military personnel, and three Haitians who are nationalized from the United States.

Three other Colombians died in shootings with the Haitian Police in the two days after the assassination.
