From pitching to DRS to impact player, know how many rules have changed in IPL this time

IPL 2023 This time due to three new rules, many things will change. This time teams will be able to select play-11 after the draw, DRS range will also be increased and most importantly teams will be able to use impact player. These three rules are such that it will increase the interest of IPL matches. BCCI has mailed to all franchisees regarding these three rules.

So far it has always happened in cricket that teams have to choose to play-11 even before the draw, but this time in IPL the teams will be able to share play-11 after the draw. This rule was implemented in the recently held SA20. Under this rule, the captain of both teams will have two sheets. One sheet will have the names of the 11 players in the batting-first position and the other sheet will have the names of the 11 players in the bowling-first position. On both sheets the names of 5-5 substitutes will also be written, who can be used as impact players. After the draw, both captains will exchange their game-11.

This time in IPL, teams will also be able to take DRS on decisions related to width and off the ball by the referee. Previously, the DRS was made only on exit or non-exit decisions. Now if a batsman feels that the ball was wide or void and the umpire has deemed the ball fair, then the batsman can challenge the umpire’s decision. Similarly, if the bowling team feels that the ball was not wide or void but the umpire has declared the ball invalid, then the bowling team may also challenge the umpire’s decision. However, there has not been an increase in the amount of DRS available to teams per inning. That is, only from the DRS available, teams will have to take the risk of making DRS on decisions related to widths and without the ball.

This may turn out to be the game changing rule of this IPL season. Under this rule, teams can replace one of their players with another player in the middle of the match. A team will be allowed to bring only one impact player to a match. At the time of the draw, the captain will give the names of 5 substitute players in addition to player-11 and one of these players will be able to use the captain as an impact player. To bring the impact player onto the field, the captain will have to inform the field referee or the fourth official.
