Fresneda and Romeu: options for a ‘low cost’ Barça

The economy rules and reality prevails over illusions. The FC Barcelona lives complicated moments and if the past season thanks to the levers he was able to go to the market with certain guarantees and pay for the transfers of Raphinha, Lewandowski or Koundé (plus that of Ferran Torres in the previous winter market) this course it seems that only players with the letter of freedom will be able to reach the blaugrana club as Ilkay Gundogan or Iñigo Martinez. To complete the squad, as long as sales can be activated, cheap players will have to be used. With the exception of the Brazilian Vitor Roque, it is not clear if he will join this summer, in January or next season, the Blaugrana club will have to use low-cost players.

Xavi still needs a right back and a midfielder. On the right side, the squad is orphaned by a specialist (a midfielder converted to a winger like Sergi Roberto or a central defender like Jules Koundé plays) and in the midfield someone is needed to fill the gap left by the departure of Sergio Busquets.

On the right side, the options of Cancelo and Juan Foyth seem to be so out of economic reach from Barcelona like those from the midfield, where they have gone from thinking about Zubimendi and Kimmich to thinking about Parejo and ending up with Oriol Romeu, from Girona. In the case of the winger, all eyes are on Iván Fresneda, from Valladolid, who is also wanted by Borussia Dortmund.

In the midfielder, all roads lead to Oriol Romeu. The Girona midfielder is chosen by Barcelona to fill the position left by Sergio Busquets. The first option of the sports management to fill the vacancy of the former Barça captain, once the options of Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and Joshua Kimmich from Bayern had been ruled out for financial reasons, was Dani Parejo, but the Villarreal player has rejected the proposal.

Dani Parejo had a clause in his contract whereby he could go free until June 30. Barcelona tried to convince the player before expiring that term. In recent days, the option that the Madrid youth squad could join the Barça ranks was considered very advanced, but as the negotiations progressed the operation began to move away. As AS has learned, neither the economic proposal nor the Barcelona sports project finished convincing him, in addition to the fact that he feels very loved in Vila-real and at no time did he see the option of leaving the Yellow Submarine as clear.

After Dani Parejo’s refusal, Barcelona has activated plan B: Oriol Romeu, who entered Barcelona youth football in 2004, where he spent seven years when he stayed at Barcelona B and was unable to make the leap to the first team. In 2011 he signed for Chelsea, but he did not succeed at Stamford Bridge and was loaned to Valencia and Stuttgart before moving to Southampton, where he arrived on loan and was finally acquired by the English team.

He spent seven seasons at Southampton, becoming one of the most beloved players by the fans at St Mary’s Stadium. Eager to return home after so many years away, he ended up at Girona where he has been one of Michel’s key players. His termination clause is over five million euros, which makes him an affordable option for the Blaugrana economy, which will have to fight harder to sign Fresneda, with a clause of 20 million euros.
