Mexico is rich in natural resources, but its lithium reserves remain untapped. A new innovation could change that. A French company, SEGULA Technologies, has developed a technology that stores renewable energy using compressed air instead of lithium batteries.
A New Way to Store Energy
The technology, called REMORA Home, uses a patented isothermal process. When there’s excess energy from solar or wind power, the system compresses air, which is stored safely. When energy production drops, the air is released and turned into electricity. This system is chemical-free and non-mechanical, eliminating risks associated with traditional batteries.
The benefits are clear: no toxic leaks, no risk of fires, and no dependence on mining. The system’s steel and aluminum components are recyclable and have a lifespan of at least 30 years. Installation is straightforward, with a reversible compressor connected to solar panels or wind turbines, and a storage tank that can be indoors or outdoors.
The system is quiet, space-efficient, and can be installed in homes, garages, or basements. A mobile app monitors energy consumption, helping homeowners reduce costs. This technology addresses a significant issue with renewable energy: storage. Solar panels don’t produce energy at night, and wind turbines need wind to operate, resulting in wasted energy without storage.
Beyond Lithium
By not relying on lithium, REMORA Home alleviates pressure on supply chains and reduces environmental and social impacts associated with lithium extraction. It also decreases dependence on fossil fuels and can power remote areas. An industrial version, REMORA Stack, is available for large-scale energy storage. Both solutions stem from a previous project, REMORA Offshore, designed for underwater energy storage.
The development of REMORA Home highlights that not all green technologies are equally sustainable. Using compressed air instead of lithium shows that it’s possible to innovate without repeating past mistakes. This technology represents a significant step towards a cleaner energy transition.
Renewable energy without storage is not enough. Technologies like REMORA Home are crucial for maximizing the potential of solar and wind power. As innovations like this and vertical wind turbines continue to emerge, the future of energy looks brighter.
