Four dead after shooting at a restaurant on the northern border of Mexico

Cuatro muertos tras tiroteo en un restaurante en la frontera norte de México

A shooting at a restaurant in Ciudad Juárez, on Mexico’s northern border, left four dead and one injured while diners enjoyed their food.

According to the preliminary report, armed men entered the place and shot at the victims despite the presence of other clients, in an event that was documented in images.

The balance is two men and two women dead, an injured man who was taken to a hospital for medical attention and two other injured people who did not require hospitalization.

Subsequently, investigative police officers and criminalistics experts attended to carry out the corresponding investigations.

According to witnesses, the victims were celebrating a birthday and had just sang "the mornings" when armed individuals broke into the business and opened fire.

This multi-homicide occurs just one month after five people were killed by firearms in a similar massacre on May 6.

On that occasion, the victims were assaulted aboard a Chevrolet Spark vehicle, after they left the federal courts.

According to data from the North Zone District Prosecutor’s Office, in Ciudad Juárez in January 79 homicides were committed, in February there were 82, by March the count dropped to 67, while in April it was only 62 and in May they increased again to 107.

These events reflect the violent wave in Mexico, which registered 33,316 homicides in 2021 after the two most violent years in its history, with 34,688 murder victims in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.

The perception of insecurity among Mexicans increased from 65.8% in December to 66.2% in March, according to the quarterly survey released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
