Finnish President Alexander Stubb signed on Wednesday during a visit to Kiev with his Ukrainian counterpart: Volodymyr Zelenskya security agreement by which Helsinki commits to maintaining its security agreement political and military support to Ukraine for the next 10 years.

This makes Finland the eighth country to offer Ukraine bilateral security guarantees after the G-7 countries decided on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius last summer.

“Finland will continue to provide long-term military, political and financial support, as well as humanitarian and rescue assistance to Ukraine for as long as necessary, with the same dynamism as since the beginning of the large-scale war of aggression,” the minister said document reads. .

“Ukraine, on the other hand, is firmly committed to implementing governance reforms, such as transparency, accountability and anti-corruption reforms,” says the text published by the Finnish presidency.

Helsinki also emphasizes in the document that Ukraine’s future depends on joining the European Union (EU) and NATO. With the signing of the agreement, the delivery of a 23rd military aid package to Kiev worth 188 million euros was also announced, so that, according to Finnish government calculations, the total since the start of the war now amounts to almost 2,000 million.

Through his Telegram channel, Zelensky welcomed the signing of “a strong document that shows Finland’s readiness to continue supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression.”

“Many thanks to Finland for supporting Ukraine and our people. Thank you for the help!” he emphasized.

For his part, Stubb thanked the “warm reception” in his X report, in which he specified that among the topics discussed with Zelensky were the “peace formula” proposed by the Ukrainian leader, the current situation on the front and the European perspective regarding support for Ukraine. “My main message is that Finland is by your side for as long as necessary,” he said.

This is Stubb’s first trip to Kyiv since being elected president last January.
