The results of the MRI that shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. underwent reveal that his wrist has not reached the expected level of recovery and he will not be able to start his swinging program, ahead of his return to the San Francisco Padres. Diego.

The Padres manager, Bob Melvin, indicated Wednesday that the progress made by Tatis Jr. is still behind the stipulated level, a factor that has prevented him from being given a medical clearance to carry out his training with the bat.

“At this point he still won’t have a bat in his hand. But let’s hope that moment will come sooner rather than later,” Melvin said when speaking to the press.

The manager said the star shortstop is doing everything he can to stay fit in other areas of the game, like fielding groundballs or running the bases, among other things that don’t compromise the injured wrist.

Tatis Jr. underwent surgery on his scaphoid bone on March 16 and was scheduled to return to the team in early June, but progress on his recovery has been slower than expected and his return will take place when he is in a position to grip the bat and execute his swings normally.

Since his arrival in the Major Leagues, the native of San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, has had to deal with injury problems, which have reduced his presence on the field.

Last season, despite the fact that he finished third in the voting for the National League Most Valuable Player award, hitting an average of .282 with 42 home runs and 97 RBIs, Tatis Jr. was only able to play 130 games as a result of various injuries, including left shoulder dislocation.

These injuries forced the team to move him to the outfield, where he played 25 games, as a measure to reduce the risk that he would injure his shoulder again.
