Sarla Jatav was arrested in 2005 at the Etawah railway station when she was trying to board a train. Several cases like murder, kidnapping, extortion were registered against him and the state government had also put a reward of one lakh rupees on his arrest. After his arrest, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Sarla Jatav spent most of her life in narrow valleys and gorges, yet she was interested in modern fashion.

In this regard, a retired police officer disclosed that Ettawa was famous for wearing branded clothes and having a keen interest in make-up despite being a bandit and living in narrow valleys.
