Fashion is the most popular e-commerce category in France

The French are very active online shoppers, according to a study recently published by the Federation of Electronic Commerce and Sale (FEVAD).

According to the study, each French Internet user made an average of 4.2 online transactions per month in 2021 and spent an average of 3,100 euros in electronic commerce throughout the year (compared to 2,700 euros in 2020). But what exactly do French online shoppers buy?

The majority of online shoppers in France are fashion buyers. The 60% of online shoppers surveyed by FEVAD buy in online fashion stores. This makes the fashion category the only product category that more than half of French e-commerce customers buy.

In 2021, France’s leading online retailer in the fashion segment was veepee.fr (formerly known as vente-privee.com). The French fashion retailer generated total net sales of 1.6 billion euros in its domestic market in 2021. It occupies a clear first position with a huge advantage, but notes a slight decrease in net sales of the -5% compared to 2020.

The second place, shein.comcurrently in several countries around the world, shows more than impressive growth compared to the previous year. After a 58% increaseshein.com recorded total net sales in 2021 of €841 million in 2021. Rankings 3-5 have shown slower growth and are therefore likely to lose more ground to shein.com in the coming years.
