Exhibition “Leonardo Da Vinci and his followers” shows his work as a mentor

Exposición "Leonardo Da Vinci y sus seguidores" muestra su labor como mentor

Through 11 oil paintings and 2 drawings, which are part of the exhibition "Leonardo da Vinci and his followers"the joint work and legacy of this Renaissance artist can be seen in Mexico City.

"All these works are important, there is not one that was really captivating in particular over the others, to choose one we would have to go to the aspect of historicity and which ones are more related to Leonardo himself"responded to Efe in a conference the curator of the sample, Nicola Barbatelli, prior to the inauguration of this exhibition, which constitutes an atypical study of the Italian.

works like "discreet cupcake", which was a direct collaboration between the teacher and one of his students; a drawing of what was "Battle of Anghiari" made by the same author, as well as the representation that he made with another student of the "Saint Catherine of Alexandria"expose the thought and legacy that the painter left in his apprentices.

The artist’s vision on themes such as death, eroticism and struggle are around the 13 works on display.

According to the curator, Da Vinci collaborated with his students in a peculiar way, because sometimes it was he himself who drew the design of the paintings and it was his followers who finished the work, so the approach to these works represents a different experience from thinking of Leonard.

Among the students who signed the collected works are Salaì, Bernardino Luini, Marco d’Oggiono and Giampetrino.

According to the Italian ambassador in Mexico, Luigi De Chiara, the exhibition, which will open to the public on June 17, in the Torre del Reloj gallery of the Miguel Hidalgo mayor’s office, in western Mexico City, continues to be part of the promotional activities of the 500 years of Da Vinci’s death that they commemorated in 2019.

The private exhibition will be available until November 25 and on Mondays there will be free tickets.

Although the most exploited facet of Leonardo da Vinci is that of a painter, the artist’s ingenuity and imagination transcended the world of art and reached fields as diverse as science, civil and military engineering, anatomy or urban planning.

Recently, the "Gioconda"better known as "The Mona Lisa" and Da Vinci’s masterpiece, located in the Louvre Museum in Paris, suffered an attack after a man threw a cake at the painting under the pretext of denouncing climate change. However, the bulletproof glass that covers the canvas saved the artwork.
